Barbara Stauss
Miriam Zlobinski

Barbara Stauss was born and raised in Switzerland, and moved to Berlin to study Russian, and later photography and visual communication. In 1996, she was a founding member of Mare—Die Zeitschrift der Meere, a sea-themed magazine dedicated to classic photo reportage and picture essays. Since that time, Stauss has been image director at Mare, responsible for its photographic concepts and visual narratives. In 2010, Stauss organized the re-launch of the German edition of Reporters Without Border’s annual photo book, and went on to work as project manager with the organization. The re-launch received the Kress Award that year. Stauss also works as a freelance editor. In addition to these editorial activities, Stauss curates photo exhibitions and teaches photo-editing seminars. She was a tutor at World Press Photo’s workshop in Sri Lanka in 2003, a master for World Press Photo’s 2006, 2007 and 2008 Joop Swart Masterclasses, and is also a nominator for the masterclass. In 2018, she founded Studio Stauss in Berlin, a place for cooperation and a platform of experts in photo-editing. Miriam Zlobinski works as a researcher in the field of Visual History, as a curator and photo editor. She studied Art history and History and was a member of the Picture Editing Class at the Ostkreuz School for Photography. Since then she curated several exhibitions at the Maxim Gorki Theater, the Ministry of Foreign Affair in Berlin, the European Month of Photography and the International Photoszene Festival in Cologne. As a picture editor she works for the national broadcaster Deutschlandfunk Kultur and together with Barbara Stauss among other international projects for the annual book Fotos für die Pressefreiheit for the German section of Reporters without Borders. Miriam writes for several medias and teaches at Society for Humanistic Photography e. V. (GfHF), Emerge – Academy for Visual Journalism and the Ostkreuz School for Photography. She is a founding member of Dejavu – Society for Photography and Perception e.V., an appointed member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie (DGPh) and received the Research Grant of the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation in 2018. Beside that Miriam is doing her PhD at the Humboldt University in Berlin with a thesis titled “The political image in photojournalism within the old Federal Republic of Germany, based on the example of the magazine Stern. A critical approach to the collective visual memory”.
