About the workshop

APPROACHES TO PORTRAITURE

This 5-day photography workshop explores portraiture in its broadest sense. Much of the week will involve photographing people: from group exercises where participants photograph one another to encounters with new subjects around the island.

Together, we will explore different approaches and attitudes toward portraiture, including the challenges and hesitations that often arise when photographing “the other.” Many photographers feel self-conscious or uncertain when approaching potential subjects, asking for their participation, or directing them in front of the camera. Through guided exercises, discussions, and shared experiences, we will develop strategies for building trust, making connections, and creating a collaborative space in which subjects can reveal and express themselves—often through subtle gestures and body language.

Lighting will also play an important role in our practice. While we will embrace natural light, we will also experiment with simple artificial light to gain more control over the outcome. Participants are encouraged to bring portable lighting equipment or reflectors if available, though we will explore creative solutions with the tools at hand.

This workshop will be an intensive yet supportive environment, combining shooting assignments, group discussions, and reflective conversation. The goal is not only to strengthen your technical and creative skills, but also to deepen your understanding of the relational aspect of portrait photography.

Dana Lixenberg

Dana Lixenberg is a Dutch photographer renowned for her stripped-down, deeply intimate portraits that highlight the raw essence of her subjects. Working primarily with a large-format field camera, Lixenberg engages in what she calls a “slow dance” with her sitters—a deliberate and patient process that fosters connection and authenticity. The resulting images are rich in texture, detail, and emotional depth, capturing individuals with honesty and dignity while rejecting social stereotypes. Her work is marked by compositional precision, empathy, and a quiet but powerful intimacy that transcends traditional portraiture. While Lixenberg has photographed many cultural icons through her editorial work, her most significant projects focus on marginalized communities across the United States, reflecting her profound understanding of the country’s social landscape. Notable series include Jeffersonville, Indiana (2005), documenting a small town’s homeless population; The Last Days of Shishmaref (2008), depicting an Alaskan Inupiaq community threatened by climate change; and her acclaimed long-term project Imperial Courts, 1993–2015 (2015), chronicling life in a Watts, Los Angeles housing project over 22 years. This body of work, which includes photographs, a publication, audio recordings, and a three-channel video installation, earned her the prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize in 2017 and continues to be exhibited internationally. Lixenberg lives and works between Amsterdam and New York and studied photography at the London College of Printing and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Her work is held in major collections and has been exhibited globally at institutions such as the Aperture Foundation, The Photographers’ Gallery, the Rijksmuseum, and the Stedelijk Museum.
